Traffic

At P.K. Yonge there are 1150 students in more than 870 families who are dropped off and picked up from school every day.

Traffic procedures have been established to ensure your child's (and all children's) safety and well being and to address parental concerns brought to the attention of the school administration.

With your cooperation we can keep ALL children out of harm's way by not having them picked up or dropped off in parking lots; not entering parking lots where vehicles are moving, backing up or turning around; and not crossing roadways
.

Drop Off and Pick Up

By reading with care and following the traffic guidelines outlined below you can be an active participant in ensuring the safety of ALL children at P.K. Yonge:

  • Only use the Front Circle loop and Gym area loop for drop off/pick up areas.  Do not use parking PKY lots or adjacent streets.
  • Elementary students arrive 7:30 – 7:55am, picked up 2:30–2:50pm
  • Secondary students arrive 8:00 – 8:35am, picked up 2:40–2:55pm
  • Elementary students use the Front Circle for drop off and pick up.
  • Secondary students (6-12) use the gym area for drop off and pick up.
  • Band students with large instruments may use the Front Circle for drop off and pick up
  • Families with both elementary and secondary students must plan for older siblings to meet younger siblings at the Front Circle for pick up between 2:45 and 2:50pm.
  • If you must park, please do so in the Front Circle Lot (Lot B - A Parent and Visitor Lot) or in the graded, unpaved lot adjacent to the Business Office. A PKY Visitor Parking PASS is required. (see the PKY Parking Guide for details)
  • Elementary students are picked up by 3:00pm or go to the After School Program.
  • Secondary students must be off campus by 3:10pm  or go to Study Hall in the Library.

Elementary Pick Up - Numbered Mirror Hangers and Radios

Each family will be assigned an identifying number and will receive two identically numbered PKY rear view mirror hanging tags.  These tags are to be displayed in the one or two cars that will be picking up your children.  Teachers and staff will have radios.  As your vehicle enters the front circle, a “spotter” will read and relay your family number to teachers, then your children will be alerted and prepared for prompt pick up.  As previously noted, families with elementary and secondary students should devise a plan to have older siblings meet younger siblings on the Front Circle where all children can be picked up between 2:45–2:55pm.   Additional hanger tags are available for a small fee.

Front Circle – Pick Up and Drop Off  Procedures

  • For families with only Elementary students
  • For families with Elementary and Secondary students in same vehicle
  • Front circle is a single traffic lane for drop off 7:30 – 8:35am and pickup 12:30 – 3:00pm
  • No Parking or unattended vehicles permitted
  • Drop off area is the blue covered walk from I Wing to the Main Office
  • Vehicles pull all the way forward, not at specific benches/areas
  • Stop one time to load/unload ALL your students
  • Prepare all belongings to unload/load quickly
  • Staff & Safety Patrols assist with loading/unloading students (doors, bags)
  • Exit front circle promptly via Left turn only & Right turn only lanes
  • Always properly display your PKY Pick Up mirror tag
  • Parking is available in Lot B – Front Circle Lot and the North unpaved lot

MS/HS Music students with large instruments

  • 7:20 – 8:00am -   rules as above, please remember to pull forward
  • 8:00 – 8:35am -  drop off at any front circle area

For Families with Multiple Children Attending PKY:
  • Please devise a plan with your children, elementary and secondary, to all meet at the bench area of the youngest child for pickup at this site.
  • Establish an arrival and pick up time between 2:45 – 3:00pm

Gym Area – Secondary Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures

  • Enter and exit through the gate via SW 11th TERR  and SW 16th Avenue
  • For families with secondary students
  • No Parking or unattended vehicles permitted
  • Drop off area is the east drive beside the Gym main entrance
  • No double parking in student/faculty parking lot
  • Prepare all belongings to unload/load quickly

GYM area Access Gate

P. K. Yonge has installed a movable gate at the Gym area allowing access to SW 11th Terrace and SW 16th Avenue. This gate will online be open each morning and afternoon. Parents of secondary students will enter and exit P. K. Yonge using this access for drop off and pick up. The Gym gate adjacent to L wing will remain locked, so there will be NO Gym area entry or exit to the north campus or SW 11th Street.

In the Spring/Summer of 2013, the city will begin construction and enhancements to SW Depot Avenue and creating a round-about at the intersection at SW 11th Street.  This project will take one year to complete and will surely further complicate the vehicle access to P.K. Yonge.

P.K. Yonge is governed by the College of Education at the University of Florida.
